Soft Shell Crab Specialist Restaurant

When it comes to food, no bad weather can stop the hungry stomach. Last Sunday, it was raining very heavy in the late afternoon. We had earlier made a reservation at a soft shell crab restaurant in Jalan Kuchai Lama at 6:30pm. Braving the almost stormy weather, we headed south from our house in Petaling Jaya towards the restaurant at 6:00pm. Despite taking a wrong turn at Jalan Sungai Besi and ended up heading towards City Centre’s direction and having to make U-turn back, we made it to the restaurant at 6:30pm sharp.

When I reached the restaurant only I realised that I had been to the same place for dim sum before. I like the ambience at the restaurant. The ground floor features an aquarium with live fishes. A “condominium” which supposedly houses the soft shell crabs but I don’t see any crabs inside. The highlight of the restaurant would be the wall that is decorated with photos of local as well as foreign celebrities who had dined in the Soft Shell Crab Specialist Restaurant before.

The “Who’s Who” who had dined here before

Having 5 adults at the table, we each ordered a dish to make the ordering process faster. In no time, we have ordered a mixed vege, a salted egg soft shell crab, a stewed pork fillet and a beancurd. Wait a minute! We actually ordered 5 dishes but I have forgotten to take the photo of the dish – marmite pork! Argggghhh!!

Mixed Vege with Cashew Nuts (RM20.00)

It didn’t take too long for the dishes to arrive. We waited for about 10 minutes after ordering for our dishes to start arriving at our table. First came the mixed vege with cashew nuts. The serving portion is just nice for 5 adults. The lotus root is crunchy and so are the snow peas. Of course, from the whole dish, my daughter kept on asking for the cashew nuts only Winking smile

House Special Beancurd with Crab Meat Sauce (RM18.00)

The House Special Beancurd with Card Meat Sauce came next. I find the portion a bit small though for this dish considering that beancurd is not that expensive. The thick gooey crab meat sauce goes well with rice. The dish is not so salty and the taste is just nice IMHO.

Salted Egg Soft Shell Crabs (RM40.00)

When the restaurant named itself a specialist in a certain dish, it better live up to its name and I find the next dish indeed lived up to expectation. The salted egg enhanced the taste of the soft shell crabs. The crabs were deep fried, golden brown and crispy. We ordered 2 crabs and it was priced at RM8.00 per 100gram.

Stewed Pork Fillet with Salted Fish (RM25.00)

Since I forgot to take a photo of the Marmite Pork, I would skip the details but in general, it tasted nice too. Last came the stewed pork fillet with salted fish. Despite the big claypot, I find the portion disappointingly small. Of course, the combination of the pork fillet and the salted fish and cuttlefish brings out a very nice aroma from the claypot but it was kinda letdown seeing the portion.

As a whole, the Soft Shell Crab Specialist Restaurant was a good dining experience. Just realised that there are many eating places at Kuchai Lama. Perhaps, in another day, we’ll try out other restaurants at that area.
